Kolkata (West Bengal), April 30 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fire at Hotel Rituraj in Kolkata’s Burra Bazar area, which claimed 14 lives, and said that she herself monitored the rescue operation throughout the night and mobilised fire brigade services to the spot.

She further told that combustible materials were stored inside the hotel, which then sparked the fire, causing the death of 14 people. The fire broke out at around 8:30 PM on Tuesday.

In a statement on X, CM Banerjee said, “My heart goes out to the victims of the fire incident that took place at a private hotel (Rituraj) in Burra Bazar area.”

“I monitored the rescue and fire fight operations throughout the night and mobilised maximal fire brigade services in the area. 14 died eventually in total because there were combustible materials stored inside. An investigation has been ordered. My condolences to the victim families and solidarity for all affected,” she added.

Apart from this, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee also took to the social media platform X to express grief and extend support.

“Shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the devastating fire at Mechhua. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and I pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” Banerjee said

“The state administration, along with volunteers from various organisations, is making every effort to support those affected and to ensure effective relief and rehabilitation. In this difficult hour, we stand in unwavering solidarity with all those impacted,” he added.

Meanwhile, in response to the tragedy, Kolkata Police has formed a special investigation team to determine the cause of the fire and probe possible lapses in safety norms.

At the time of the incident, the hotel had 88 boarders accommodated in 42 rooms and was staffed by 60 employees.

According to Kolkata police, the deceased include 11 men, one woman, one boy, and one girl. Of the 14 bodies recovered from the site, eight have been identified so far. Thirteen people sustained injuries, of whom 12 have been treated and discharged, while one person remains hospitalised. (ANI)
